Why Is My Internet So Slow? Speed It Up Fast

⚡ QUICK FIX — Try These First (1 Minute!)

- Restart your router → unplug 30 seconds → plug back in → wait 2 minutes ✅

- Move closer to the router → walls & distance slow down signal ✅

- Switch to 5GHz Wi-Fi (if available) → faster than 2.4GHz ✅

- Disconnect unused devices → too many connected = everyone slows down ✅

- Close background apps → downloads, streaming, updates eat speed ✅

✅ Faster now? Great! Still slow? → Full Detailed Guide below 👇

📖 DETAILED GUIDE — Step by Step

🔍 WHY IT HAPPENS

Slow internet is rarely just "your provider being slow." Most of the time it's one of these:

- Router placement — behind the TV, in a cupboard, on the floor = signal blocked by walls & furniture

- Wrong Wi-Fi band — 2.4GHz reaches further but is slower; 5GHz is much faster over shorter distances

- Too many devices — phones, TVs, laptops, consoles, cameras all sharing the same bandwidth

- Peak time congestion — evenings 7–10pm = everyone streaming & browsing = ISP network gets busy

- Interference — microwaves, baby monitors, Bluetooth, and neighbour's Wi-Fi all fight for the same airwaves

✅ STEP-BY-STEP FULL FIX

Step 1 — Restart Your Router Properly (Most Effective!)

- Unplug the power cable from the wall — don't just use the power button

- Wait 30–60 seconds — this clears the router's memory and refreshes the connection

- Plug it back in → wait 2 minutes for all lights to stabilise

- Reconnect your devices → test speed

💡 This alone fixes 50% of slow internet issues!

Step 2 — Move Your Router to a Better Spot

- ✅ Central & elevated — middle of the house, on a shelf or table

- ✅ Open space — not behind the TV, not in a cupboard, not on the floor

- ✅ Away from appliances — microwaves, cordless phones, speakers block Wi-Fi signals

- ❌ Avoid: Thick walls, metal surfaces, fish tanks, large mirrors — all block signal

Step 3 — Switch to 5GHz for Faster Speed

- Most modern routers have two Wi-Fi networks:

- 2.4GHz — slower, reaches further, goes through walls better

- 5GHz — much faster, shorter range, less interference

- If you're close to the router → connect to the 5GHz network → instant speed boost!

- If you're far away → stay on 2.4GHz for better range

Step 4 — Disconnect Bandwidth Hogs

- Every device shares your internet speed — too many = everyone slows down

- Disconnect devices you're not using: old phones, tablets, idle TVs, game consoles

- Pause large downloads, Steam updates, or cloud backups when you need speed

- On your phone: turn off background app refresh in Settings

Step 5 — Test & Compare

- Go to speedtest.net → run a test next to the router

- Then run one further away → if close is fast but far is slow → it's a Wi-Fi signal issue, not your internet

- If both are slow → the issue is likely your ISP or modem

Step 6 — Change Wi-Fi Channel (Advanced)

- Neighbouring routers on the same channel cause interference

- Log into your router admin (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)

- Find "Channel" settings → switch from "Auto" to channel 1, 6, or 11 (for 2.4GHz) → these don't overlap

- Save → retest speed

🛠️ STILL SLOW? WHAT TO DO NEXT

- Slow only in evenings? → That's peak-time congestion — your ISP's network is busy. Try using the internet earlier or schedule downloads for overnight

- Slow everywhere, all the time? → Contact your ISP — there may be a fault in your area or your plan speed is too low

- Only slow on one device? → The issue is that specific device — clear cache, close background apps, or update its software

- Old router? → If it's 5+ years old, it may not handle modern speeds — ask your ISP for a newer model
