📖 DETAILED GUIDE — Step by Step
🔍 WHY RESETTING WORKS
Your router is a tiny computer — it runs 24/7 and over time:
- Memory fills up with temporary data → slows down or freezes
- Connection glitches build up → internet drops or becomes unstable
- Software bugs appear → restarting clears them all
- IP lease refreshes → your ISP assigns a fresh, clean connection
💡 A proper restart is maintenance — do it once a month even if nothing's wrong!
✅ STEP-BY-STEP FULL REBOOT
Step 1 — Identify Your Setup
- Combined unit (most common): One box = modem + router together → simple!
- Separate devices: Two boxes — one modem (from your ISP) + one router → follow the order below
Step 2 — Unplug Both Devices
- Pull the power cable from the wall socket — don't just press the power button
- Wait 30–60 seconds — this gives internal components time to fully power down and clear memory
Step 3 — Plug Modem Back In FIRST
- If you have separate devices → modem always goes first
- Wait 1–2 minutes until the "Online" or "Internet" light becomes solid
- This means your modem has successfully reconnected to your ISP
Step 4 — Plug Router Back In
- After the modem is stable → plug the router power cable back in
- Wait 1–2 minutes → Wi-Fi light should appear and become solid
- Your network name will reappear on your devices
Step 5 — Reconnect & Test
- On your phone/laptop → toggle Wi-Fi OFF then ON → reconnect
- Open a few websites → everything should be working ✅
- Your Wi-Fi name and password stay exactly the same — nothing is deleted!
⚠️ RESTART vs FACTORY RESET — KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!
| Feature | Restart / Reboot (Do THIS) ✅ | Factory Reset (Only if needed) ⚠️ |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Turns off & on — keeps ALL settings | WIPES everything — returns to brand-new state |
| Wi-Fi name/password | Stays the same | Resets to default (on label under router) |
| Saved settings | All preserved | Lost — you must set up from scratch |
| When to use | Every time — safe, fast, recommended | Forgot password, locked out, nothing else works |
🚨 WARNING: Never press the small recessed "Reset" button unless you absolutely have to! It erases your Wi-Fi password and all settings!
🛠️ WHEN TO USE FACTORY RESET (Last Resort Only!)
Only do this if:
- You forgot your Wi-Fi password and can't log into the router
- Restarting multiple times didn't fix the problem
- You're selling or giving away the router
How to Factory Reset Safely:
- Locate the small recessed button on the back/bottom of the router
- Use a paperclip or pin → press and hold for 10–15 seconds
- Watch the lights — they'll flash or change → release when this happens
- Wait 2 minutes for full reboot
- Reconnect using the default Wi-Fi name & password printed on the router label
- Log into the admin panel → set your new custom Wi-Fi name & password immediately
📋 TROUBLESHOOTING — AFTER RESET STILL NOT WORKING?
- Lights stay off? → Check power cable → try different wall socket
- No "Online/Internet" light on modem? → The issue is your ISP, not your router — contact them
- Wi-Fi network missing? → Router may be in "bridge mode" — factory reset or check admin settings
- Still slow? → Your router may be old or faulty → ask your ISP for a replacement
- Connection drops often? → Change Wi-Fi channel → move router → update firmware in admin panel
